This summer we entered a t-shirt design contest at our favorite San Francisco bar (where Shitty Kitty was born!), Shotwell’s– and we won! Here’s the design that goes on a classic white tee:

Still not got enough Spider-Man musical related news in your life? We’ll you’re in luck, because recently I (Steven) was commissioned to do the artwork for an upcoming NYC FringeFest play The Legend of Julie-Taymor, or The Musical That Killed Everybody! Here’s the poster I drew and painted. (Casey did the typography–just look at that neat lettering!)

It’s a pretty wild production that according to the production’s Kickstarter “tells the rise and fall story of director Julie Taymor and the behind-the-scenes scandals of Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark on Broadway! Facing financial problems, actor injuries, technical problems, performance delays, scathing reviews, and a complete overhaul… this is how the most expensive flop in theatre history made Broadway legend.”

I’m pretty excited because normally we’ve just been working on posters and playbills for productions and events, but for this play they wanted me to design the whole backdrop for the stage as well. The producer Travis Ferguson mocked up a loose sketch of what he wanted giving me the art direction of basically Picasso’s Guernica plus Spider-Man plus tragedy. They wanted a 20 foot wide mural that could be cut into three parts.

Here’s was my initial sketch:

And then here’s the final, taking the inked sketch and different layers of vector shapes on Illustrator. (And more of Casey’s lettering.) I’m guessing it will be chopped up and printed on big ol sheets of canvas.

Last year we won Brooklyn’s own Sixpoint Brewery design contest with our Mr. Sixpoint design.

This year’s theme is “Beer Is Culture”. So we decided to go with a very classic version of culture: Ancient Egypt. Et voila!

There’s some very important stuff going down this week in the world of net neutrality. In the words of our friends at Public Knowledge:

On February 16th, Congress will hold a hearing on Net Neutrality where Members will make known their intentions to repeal the FCC’s recently introduced Net Neutrality rules. If passed, this repeal wouldn’t just scrap the rules–it would also prevent the agency from taking action on this important issue in the future. While the FCC’s rules are far from perfect, they do provide a framework under which the agency can protect consumers and punish bad actors. Without this framework, internet service providers will be free to discriminate against users, services and types of traffic at will.

Dear theatre lovers:

Our friend Hal Fickett founded the Green Theatre Collective a few months ago which in his words “embodies the concept that theatre and the preservation of our Earth can co-exist.” We designed his logo for him!

Tomorrow (Tue. 11/15) they’re having a party at Pianos NYC with live music, booze, and baked goods to raise money for their inaugural production of Shakespeare’s As You Like It coming this summer. HUGE thanks to everyone who voted for our entry in the Sixpoint Craft Ales design contest. WE WON! Our Mr. Sixpoint is now the face of the Brewery’s digital profile.

We are celebrating by wearing our new Sixpoint gear and drinking the home-brews they sent us as our prize! Yes it’s only just past noon. Yes we sometimes booze n’ work at the same time.

So you made have heard about the whole Google possibly interfering with net neutrality business by cutting some deals with Verizon. Have no fear! The good folks of Public Knowledge are looking out for all your digital rights– which is why we were more than happy to whip them up this little guy to put up on Boing Boing:

And speaking of fighting for a good cause– what about that Dueling Bingo game held by the great folks of 826 NYC Saturday night? More than $10,000 were raised AND guess who won?

Yup. That’s right. Casey is now a bingo champion and best friends with Jack McBrayer and Sarah Vowell. More photos of the epic win here, including shots with — oh the name dropping — Mike Myers.

James Joyce wrote a book called “Ulysses” for which you may or may not have read the Cliffnotes some time in high school. Once a year, literary lovers around the world do their darndest to reenact the events of the novel which took place over one long day in Dublin in 1904. The celebration is called Bloomsday after the main character, Leopold Bloom.

Brooklyn is having its very first Bloomsday this Saturday (6/12) thanks to the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, and the celebration is taking the form of a pub crawl along Park Slope’s 5th avenue with readings, reenactments, piping and snacks along the way!

Full disclosure: We designed the posters/pins/banners/programs etc and we love pub crawls, so even though neither Steven nor I ever finished readings “Ulysses”, our Saturday never stood a chance.
